Internships

The 574 Theatre Company in Mishawaka is excited to announce they are seeking production interns for their 2019-2020 season.  Interns will be an integral member of our production team and opportunities for leadership, supervisory, and design positions are available for qualified candidates.    

 

Positions include: 

  • Direction & Administration

  • Technical Direction

  • Properties & Carpentry

  • Costumes, Makeup & Wigs 

Interns will be asked to commit 10 hours of work a week (plus technical/dress rehearsals, load-in, performances, and load-out)  and be compensated with $50.00 per week, plus provided housing. Interns will also be eligible for class credit if it meets their institution’s requirements.  

 

Internship Program Benefits:

  • The Intern will receive hands-on training from experienced professionals in the field in addition to resume building projects and contacts in the professional field. 

 

  • Involvement in the Intern program will also include participation in a mentorship program where each apprentice is matched to a professional in the company who will mentor them in their area of interest including feedback and support in portfolio work, career goals, etc.  

 

  • The Intern will have the opportunity to experience other theatrical productions and art events in the South Bend/Mishawaka and regional area as time allows.  

 

  • The Intern will receive housing at a reasonable distance from their workspaces for the duration of the season and transportation assistance as necessary and available. 

 

  • The Intern will receive a stipend of $50 a week for their work in the season.     


 

Internship Position Details: 

Direction & Development

Description: Works with the Artistic and Executive Directors to organize, promote and maintain the mission, season, and goals of the 574 Theatre Company through assistance in administrative work, directorial support, season planning, and promotional development.  Serves as an assistant director to the resident and guest directors for the season.      

 

Required Qualifications: Previous experience in directing either professionally or at the university level.  Competency with Google Drive Suite, Office Suite Programs, Excellent creative, organizational, and writing and proof-reading skills.  Ability to effectively communicate with a wide variety of patrons in a pleasant, discretionary, and professional manner. Needs to be able to multi-task efficiently under pressure and be comfortable working collaboratively with a team.  Experience in public speaking. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Previous experience with theatrical marketing especially social media.  Experience with Graphic Design programs such as Photoshop, Gimp, and Illustrator.  Professional or Graphic Design Experience, Photography/Video Editing Experience, Experience in Web Design and maintenance.  Experience with house management. Experience or coursework in communications-related fields. Previous experience and/or Interest in Theatre Management and/or Directing.  

 

Technical Direction

Description: Serving as the Assistant Technical Director, the technical intern works with the Technical Director to effectively and safely oversee all departments within the production team.  Will serve as the technical supervisor on productions and in situations where the Technical Director (TD) is not available or otherwise engaged.  Works with Stage Management, Designers, and Department Heads to insure the production is on schedule, progressing smoothly and effectively. Works with the TD to facilitate smooth and safe build, load-in, rehearsal, performance, and load-out/strike processes.     

 

Responsibilities: Will assist the TD with all hands-on and organizational tasks, paperwork, and execution as needed. Will also be called upon to support other departments as needed by serving as a Master Electrician, Sound Engineer or other production staff as their skillset provides and following the needs of each production.  Serves as the Assistant Technical Director the Season.  

 

Required Qualifications:  Experience with scenic construction (including understanding working drawings/elevations, cut lists) experience with various construction methods, hand and power tools, adhesives, foams, and other scenic materials. Experience with Google Drive Suite and basic Office programs.  Driver’s License Required. Will need to stand, bend, and twist.  Needs to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Vectorworks, Drafting Programs, Executing working drawings, budgeting skills, Knowledge of fundamental electricity, modern construction practices and materials, and stage crafts including rigging, audio, and lighting. Own Vehicle Preferred, 1st Aid/CPR Training Preferred.  

 

Properties/Carpentry 

Description: Serving as the Props Crew Head/Assistant Properties Artisan for season productions this position will also serve as a production carpenter/run crew as needed during the season.   

 

Responsibilities:   Will assist the Properties Artisan with research, creation, sourcing, altering, and execution of rehearsal and show properties and set dressing.  Will maintain, track, and repair props during the run of show and rehearsals. This position will also construct, alter, paint, and assemble scenic elements and set dressing as needed by the production team.    

 

Required Qualifications:  Experience with basic scenic construction techniques.  Experience with craft techniques. Basic sewing skills.  Comfortable with Google Drive Suite and basic Office programs.  Ability to multi-task and effectively troubleshoot under pressure.  Will need to stand, bend, and twist and access heights. Needs to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Experience in scenic painting and/or other fine art techniques.  Experience in upholstery, mold-making, puppetry, weapons work, and previous properties experience is encouraged.  Theatre, Art, and other history classwork/knowledge is a plus. Driver’s License and Own Vehicle Preferred. 1st-Aid/CPR training a plus.  

 

Costume/Makeup/Wigs

Description: Serving as the Wardrobe and/or Wig Crew Head for season productions in addition to the Costume/Makeup Assistant, this position will support the Costume Director/Designer(s) through creation, execution, and implementation of costumes, hairpieces, and makeup looks throughout the season.  Design Opportunities are available for a qualified and motivated individual.     

 

Responsibilities: Works with the Designer/Costume Director as needed as a cutter/draper or stitcher for the season.  Will assist with pulling, fittings, and alteration as well as organizational and tracking paperwork. Will also work in costume crafts as needed and matched to their skillset.  Serves as Wardrobe Crew Head for productions responsible for tracking, quick changes, crew supervision, maintenance, and laundry during the run. Will also construct, set, style, and maintain wigs and makeup looks as needed by productions in addition to any overhire makeup and wig crew.   

 

Required Qualifications: Excellent stitching skills, experience working with commercial sewing patterns.  Excellent time management skills with the ability to follow directions and work independently in a fast-paced environment on multiple projects with open communication and discretion. Experience with Google Drive Suite Programs, Office Suite Programs.  Ability to work with wool, cotton, and latex-based products. Will need to stand, bend, and twist and work in moderate heights. Needs to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. 

 

Preferred Qualifications: Previous theatrical costume experience, including historical costume construction.  Experience with draping and flat-patterning. Experience with any/all of the following: millinery work, jewelry, armor, leatherworking, dye work, puppetry, general crafts.  Coursework in Costume History/Fashion History, costume technology a plus. Experience with lace-front and human hair wigs, cosmetology license, and stage makeup techniques advantageous.  Driver’s License and Regular Access to Vehicle preferred. 1st-Aid/CPR training a plus.
